Useful Resources

Hallo, mummies to be!

I don’t know about you, but after I have confirmed and double-confirmed that I am expecting (I tested my condition twice over with the pregnancy kit, sought the advice of both a general practitioner and a gynecologist... hey, just to be sure!), I started to prepare for my pregnancy. As another mum-to-be put it, I read up so much about pregnancy and childbirth that I felt that I was preparing for a degree in gynecology!

Since I have read up so much, I might as well share with you some of the resources that I chanced upon and find useful. I have also added on the list of resources with some others that I found on the web.

Disclaimer:

Fearless Mummy provides all information below in good faith, and for informational purposes only. I do not claim to be an authoritative guide on pregnancy. These are just my personal list of resources that I found useful, and represent only a small fraction of the resources out there. Also, most of the resources are tailored for a Singaporean, so mummies to be living elsewhere may not find it as useful.

Useful Books

“The Pregnancy Bible – Your Complete Guide to Pregnancy and Early Parenthood”, by Joanne Stone MD and Keith Eddleman MD.

Quite a comprehensive book. Almost 400 pages but with lots of colour and pictures so it was a surprisingly easy read.

• “
Pregnancy and Childbirth”, by Dr T Chang and Wong Boh Boi
This book is more tailored for Singaporeans as it quotes quite a few examples in the Singapore context. Lots of photos of happy asian mothers, so it is a comforting change from all the smiling ang mohs (not that I have anything against them…)

Useful Magazines

Motherhood (both a hardcopy and online magazine)

• My Baby magazine (only hard copies available)

The Asian Parent

Useful iPhone Applications

What to expect. Application based on the book and website What to Expect. Useful to track your pregnancy week, and to have a lighthearted read on what to look out for in pregnancy.

Are You Smarter than Your Doctor. Quirky iPhone application. Actually, I found it a tad too difficult for me! But you may find it useful if you happen to be a pregnant lady who is also medically trained.

Other good reads that are not so serious

• “The new Dad from A to Z: Real tips for a Surreal Time” by Dan Consiglio

A very thin and pictorial book. Borrowed it from the national library and had a really good laugh.

• “Autobiography of a One Year Old” by Rohan Candappa

I have this book lying around somewhere in my house. Bought it long before I got married. Remembered it as an easy read that is more light-hearted than laughing-till-tears-coming-to-my-eyes funny.

• “Be my Baby: On the Road to Fatherhood”, by Neil Humphreys

Actually, I haven’t read this book, but I have always found Neil Humphreys to be ultra hilarious.

(PS. I don’t know why these fathers are writing these humorous books. What happened to all the mothers? All too busy caring for their kids??)
